Ziggy Marley Keeping the Fire Burning

“I think that music, beats, melody, sound are a natural part of our DNA, our vibe. It’s just a part of the cycle of our lives – we’re born, we have eyes, we have music.”
-Ziggy Marley

The Artist:

The four-time Grammy-winning, first son of Rita and Bob Marley, could have arguably been born with music and political activism in his blood.

Marley’s career began as a family affair 30 years ago. At his father’s urging, Ziggy, brother Stephen and sisters Cedella and Sharon formed a vocal group, the Melody Makers. The group was embraced by fellow Jamaicans and, over the next two decades, built an international following. They earned a Best Reggae Recording Grammy for their 1988 major-label debut, “Conscious Party”, featuring the single, “Tomorrow People.” The group garnered two more Grammys, for “One Bright Day” (1989) and the other for “Fallen Is Babylon” (1997).

Ziggy’s first solo performance came in Summer 2002 on the Jeep World Outside Festival, where he toured with Sheryl Crow and other artists. The following year saw the release of his debut solo album, “Dragonfly”, and in 2006 “Love Is My Religion”, which earned Marley his fourth Grammy Award. Marley’s third solo release, “Family Time”, was produced with old friend Don Was and released this May on Marley’s independent Tuff Gong Worldwide label.

Marley has been repeatedly drawn to family-friendly projects as a musician, humanitarian and even an actor. He is an active supporter of Little Kids Rock, which brings musical instruments and music lessons to children in public schools, and he founded U.R.G.E. (Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment), a non-profit organization that benefits a wide range of charitable children’s causes in Jamaica and other developing nations.

Ziggy sings alongside rising sensation Nneka on the song, “Express Yourself,” a track produced by Frank Fitzpatrick for the upcoming Hip Hop dance film Beat the World.

The Song:

Express Yourself – Nneka feat. Ziggy Marley & Eeday

“If Damien (like Nigerian-born Nneka) represents the revolutionary “Redemption Song” part of his father, Ziggy Marley represents the heartfelt “One Love” side. Working and hanging with Ziggy, I find myself in the presence of both musical royalty and a compassionate, high spirited friend.”

– Frank Fitzpatrick
