Sway – Raising the Bar for UK Hip Hop
|
“I’m a positive person and this positivity comes out in my music. I don’t go around holding guns to people’s heads, so I won’t rap about holding guns to people’s heads. Trouble attracts trouble. If you rap about trouble, it will come to you.” -Sway
The Artist:
Proclaiming himself as the UK’s #1 Hip Hop artist, Sway has already proven at the age of 28 that he has the catalog, credibility, originality, and ever-expanding potential to back the claim up. His breakout mixtape has become legendary among underground Hip Hop fans, and his award-winning albums have proven his abilities and vision as an artist. Sway continues to push boundaries and expand his network of collaborators, showing that his ambition reaches not just throughout Britain, but to the rest of the world, as well.
Sway DeSafo began his quick climb through the ranks of the British underground Hip Hop scene at the age of sixteen. Born to a Ghanaian mother and Muslim father, Sway’s upbringing offered him a unique position to find the common ground between differing cultures and religious beliefs. At 22, Sway released his highly acclaimed mixtapes “This Is My Promo” Volumes 1&2, earning him the Mobo award of “Best Hip Hop Newcomer” over artists such as 50 Cent and The Game even before he had released his debut album. This first solo effort, This Is My Demo, earned Sway his first Mercury Prize nomination.
Following his breakout success, Sway proved the diversity of his talents by collaborating with a wide array of artists, including Akon, Lupe Fiasco, Kaiser Chiefs, and UB40’s Ali Campbell. These efforts have brought Sway’s brand of Hip Hop across both musical and cultural boundaries, showing that the language of Hip Hop is universal to anyone willing to listen. Furthermore, Sway has set a positive example for other young rappers trying to make a name for themselves. He is an outspoken opponent of gun violence and has proposed positive, rational changes to the gun policies in the UK. Sway has also made a strong, progressive push for modern Hip Hop, vowing to refrain from using racial slurs in his lyrics.
Sway’s highly anticipated album, The Deliverance, is slated to drop later this year.
