Bajah + the Dry Eye Crew – A Voice for the Voiceless
|
“We talk about different things. We talk about love…life…social problems. Music is about life.”
-Bajah
The Artist: Hailing all the way from Freetown, Sierra Leone, Bajah + the Dry Eye Crew have broken the mold for what it means to be a conscious Hip Hop artist. On the United Nations’ Human Development Index, Sierra Leone is ranked last out of 179 countries. Every day people must struggle to survive, battling unfathomable poverty, political injustice, famine, and violence. Bajah + the Dry Eye Crew have not only survived, but they have had the courage to stand up to fight against corruption in the government and the longstanding tribal violence that limits Sierra Leone’s opportunities for growth and prosperity. In a country splintered by so much chaos, Bajah + the Dry Eye Crew have found a way to bring thousands of people together to share in the joy of music. In Sierra Leone, many people refer to the group by another name, “the voice of the voiceless.”
Their adoration in Sierra Leone may know no bounds, but Bajah + the Dry Eye Crew are drawing plenty of attention from the rest of the world as well. Their music has been featured in films, including Blood Diamond, the Academy Award-nominated film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and the upcoming int’l dance film Beat The Wolrd. Furthermore, their upcoming album release will feature guest appearances by some of the most talented people in Hip Hop, including Questlove, K’NAAN, Talib Kweli, and Res. To celebrate the first elections since the beginning of Sierra Leone’s civil war, Bajah + the Dry Eye Crew released the song “Ease Di Tension.”
Even on the other side of the globe, in one of the poorest and most dangerous countries in history, there is proof of the power of music to support significant positive change. No matter what language you speak, Bajah + the Dry Eye Crew’s call to action for the oppressed and downtrodden resonates with universal clarity. The Song:
“I was immediately inspired by Bajah and the Dry Eye Crew when I first learned about them. They have managed to bring global awareness to a region devastated by social and political conflict. But, maybe more importantly, they have brought joy to places where it is hard to even imagine. Bajah and the Crew are living proof of how music can transform the human spirit, even at times of incredible hardship.” – Frank Fitzpatrick
